A Life of Recovery Book Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars - A Magnificent Book that Help Might Save Lives.  Many books about recovery have been written, and I think I’ve read them all. A friend recently sent me Woody Giessmann’s  A Life of Recovery and I am comfortable in stating that it is not only the best book about recovery I’ve ever read but it is the most user-friendly. Part memoir, part manual, and told in the best kind of literary writing that there is—from the heart plainly spoken and told—I am blown away by the gifts and powers, the love and the hope, and the helpfulness of Giessmann’s book. If you are struggling with substances and booze or if someone you love is; if you are sober curious
after reading all the many medical studies encouraging abstinence for your physical and mental health, the best positive prescription I can offer you today is A Life of Recovery

Amazing!! Must Read!! The book is a rare combination of a memoir and treatment resource for addiction. A captivating read about the struggles and ultimate triumph of a multi-talented artist. Woody bares his emotional journey through life and addiction in a highly relatable, down to earth way. Woody’s desire to help others is obvious in the closing chapters which offer invaluable guidance
for understanding and seeking treatment for addiction.

Barns and Noble: A Life of Recovery: Breaking the Chains of Addiction is a powerful and deeply personal memoir by Woody Giessmann, musician-turned-addiction specialist, who takes you on a raw, emotional journey from chaos and substance abuse to healing and hope. This inspirational story blends compelling autobiography with practical tools for families affected by addiction and untreated mental illness.

From losing his brother to addiction and suicide, to his own spiral through alcohol and drugs while performing with a major rock band, Woody's story is brutally honest and painfully relatable. His transformation into a licensed counselor and interventionist shows how recovery is possible, even in
the darkest moments.

Part memoir, part recovery guide, this book is an essential read for families looking to break generational cycles of trauma, shame, and denial. It offers real-world solutions, evidence-based tools, and emotional insights to help parents, spouses, and loved ones reclaim peace of mind, establish healthy boundaries, and support lasting recovery.

I felt a deep sadness reading about the author’s brother. It’s truly heartbreaking to see what addiction can do to a person and their loved ones. My father struggled with addiction too, and
because of it, we lost him. That pain still lives inside me — the constant thought of “I wish I could’ve saved him.” This book is a powerful reminder for anyone who doesn’t want to lose someone they love to addiction. A must-read for every family.
